As the demand for clean energy grows, innovative solutions are reshaping our communities and the environment. The StormFisher Biogas Facility in London, Ontario, is at the forefront of this transformation, expanding its capacity to produce renewable energy while benefiting the local community. Led by WalterFedy, this project highlights the potential of anaerobic digestion (AD) technology in creating a greener future.

Boosting Renewable Energy Production Capabilities

StormFisher’s facility converts food and agricultural by-products into bio-methane, a form of renewable natural gas (RNG). This process effectively reduces landfill waste and lowers greenhouse gas emissions while producing a sustainable energy source. The expansion enhances the facility’s processing capacity from 140,000 to 195,000 tonnes per year (tpy), allowing biogas production to increase from 225,000 gigajoules (GJ) per year to 675,000 gigajoules (GJ) per year.

To maximize efficiency and minimize environmental impact, the expansion integrates advanced waste processing, optimized energy output, and eco-friendly infrastructure. The addition of a fourth digester tank increases organic waste processing capacity, while the installation of a Thermophilic Acidification (T.A.R.) Tank and Reception Tank enhances biogas production. The new Digester Tank with a Bio-Dome and the expansion of both the west and east Pump Houses contribute to optimized energy output and system efficiency. Additionally, converting the MBR sump into a closed, vented condensate tank helps minimize emissions.

Community and Environmental Impact

Beyond energy production, the expansion benefits the local community and environment by supporting sustainable agricultural practices and minimizing potential environmental impacts. The addition of a digestate loadout area enables the community to access nutrient-rich fertilizer, enhancing soil health and reducing reliance on chemical alternatives. Improved accessibility to the containment area also improves site access by the community. Infrastructure improvements, including expanded stormwater management through pond enhancements, also contribute to better environmental protection.

Building a Greener Future for London, Ontario

The expansion of the StormFisher Biogas Facility is a testament to the power of sustainable infrastructure in supporting clean energy production and strengthening communities. Through innovation and environmental stewardship, this project supports a cleaner, more resilient future for London, Ontario, and beyond.
