As we proceed with construction, our dedication to retrofitting existing buildings remains crucial for combating climate change and curbing carbon emissions. At the Susan Fennel Sportsplex in Brampton, our focus on innovative energy and carbon solutions is driving an 80% reduction in the onsite carbon footprint, paving the way for us to achieve full net-zero status.
It’s worth noting that the Susan Fennel Sportsplex is not only a flagship project in Brampton’s efforts to address climate change but is also recognized as one of the city’s largest greenhouse gas emitters.
Phase One: Feasibility Study
In this initial phase, a comprehensive audit and study of the facility was conducted to identify measures for carbon reduction. The study analyzed capital costs, carbon reduction, energy savings, and maintenance impacts.
We compiled the findings into a comprehensive zero-carbon scenario for presentation to Johnson Controls and the City of Brampton for formal approval. This research enabled them to apply for a grant through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program to offset the project’s capital cost.
Phase Two: Design
During phase two, our Energy and Carbon Solutions team works to design features that seamlessly fit into the building and will contribute to carbon reduction. Features such as a geothermal system, solar PV, CO2-based refrigeration, electric heat pumps, and more. This will assist in achieving an 80% reduction.
The team focused on eliminating the use of natural gas, optimizing for energy efficiency with a geothermal system and a solar thermal system that uses renewable energy to heat and cool the building throughout the year.
Current Phase – Three: Construction
Phase three is where we currently are and where the project comes to life! In this phase, the Sportsplex will undergo a significant renovation and retrofit to implement energy-efficient features planned during phase two. This phase lasts 18 – 24 months and results in a state-of-the-art facility ready for the community to enjoy!
