Rooted in sustainability, cultural inclusivity, and resilience, Indigenous knowledge offers valuable insights into responsible resource management, community-centered design, and climate adaptation. By integrating Indigenous voices, the industry can foster more equitable representation, ensuring engineering and architecture solutions are environmentally sustainable and culturally respectful.

As a leading Canadian multi-disciplinary design firm, WalterFedy plays a crucial role in shaping how our communities look and function. In alignment with our commitment to diversity and inclusion in engineering, architecture, and planning, we have established two scholarships to support Indigenous students in shaping sustainable and innovative built environments.

Improving Access to Education

In 2024, Walterfedy launched the WalterFedy Indigenous Engineering Scholarship at the University of Guelph. In 2025, we are partnering with the University of Calgary’s School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape to introduce a new award for students interested or enrolled in the Bachelor of Design in City Innovation (BDCI) program.

Each scholarship, valued at $50,000 over five years, offer two Indigenous students a $5,000 award annually, helping reduce financial barriers to education.

“Indigenous voices are crucial to shaping engineering’s future. These scholarships enhance access and experiences for Indigenous students. We’re excited to collaborate with WalterFedy in fostering decolonized approaches within the industry.” – Dr. Julie Vale, Associate Director of Undergraduate Studies at the University of Guelph’s School of Engineering

Investing in Indigenous Talent

Scholarships are just the beginning of our commitment to fostering the meaningful inclusion of Indigenous voices and perspectives. WalterFedy is dedicated to investing in Indigenous talent through ongoing engagement, mentorship opportunities, and community involvement, helping to build confidence and long-term success for Indigenous students in STEM and design fields.
