Originally constructed in 1966, Lord Beaverbrook required a modernization that would optimize the learning environment for student success and support the new Career and Technology Studies curriculum.
The objectives of this project was to design, construct, and modernize the CTS spaces to optimize the learning environment and meet the educational requirements as set out by CBE, Alberta Education and Alberta Infrastructure. The School offers regular high school programming as well as Advanced Placement; Arts Centered Learning; Adapted Learning Program; Mental Health; Work Experience and Registered Apprenticeship Program.
The Career and Technology Studies spaces, including the Fabrication (welding) shop, Autobody shop, Automotive shop and Heavy Engineering and Equipment shop, Construction, Robotics, Cosmetology, Culinary studies, Business Studies, Leadership studies and ALP (Adapted Learning Program) classrooms were modernized. The new spaces engage students in learning in authentic, relevant and personalized learning environments. The spaces are designed to support the School’s desire to increase student success and the high school completion rate for students.
Our in-house accessibility team performed an Accessibility Assessment to determine the degree of accessibility in the school and on the grounds. We developed a report for the CBE that gave several recommendations that would greatly improve the state of accessibility within the school and surrounding property.
The school remained open during the entire construction period, so one of the main challenges was to phase the construction to minimize disruptions. The project was delivered through a Construction Management contract and subsequently our team carefully coordinated our schedule to allow the school to remain open and functioning during the entire construction period of almost two years.
